The lovely, informed folks at Lonely Planet have ranked the 500 best places to see on the planet. The usual suspects like Angkor Wat, Great Barrier Reef, Machu Picchu and The Great Wall of China deservedly take top spots on the list.

The fifth is the Taj Mahal, the world’s most magnificent ode to love. (We are, to be perfectly honest, biased, and would happily vote the Mughal marvel No 1).

In the UK, these sites came up trumps:

  • In England: the Lake District National Park (#36), The Tate Modern (#52), Stonehenge (#62) and the Eden Project (#281)
  • In Wales: Snowdonia (#181), St Davids Cathedral (#294) and the Brecon Beacons (#365)
  • In Scotland: Edinburgh Castle (#58), the Isle of Skye (#64) and Skara Brae (#134)
  • In Northern Ireland: The Giant’s Causeway (#103) and Titanic Belfast (#424)

In the US:

Grand Canyon National Park, USA

The teaser also ranks high the Colosseum in Italy, Iguazu Falls in Brazil-Argentina, Alhambra and Sagrada Familia in Spain, Aya Sofya in Turkey, Fez Medina in Morocco, Twelve Apostles in Australia, Petra in Jordan, Tikal in Guatemala, Fiordland National Park of New Zealand, Santorini in Greece, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, Museum of Old & New Art, Australia.
