Portland
With 150 vegan restaurants in the metro area, Portland has become a hotspot for vegan enthusiasts from all over the 50 states. For a city well known for its co-ops and green lifestyles it is not surprising that so many vegan spots have opened up. From smoke houses to bistros, Portland has almost every different kind of vegan food. Make sure to catch Devin’s Dive Food Cart in Sellwood and try their mac and cheese and the soy curls when you travel to Portland! But if you are looking for a really special spot, Farm Spirit is a 14-seat chef’s counter where all of the food is sourced within 100 miles. Make sure to call for a reservation.
New York City
There is no doubt that the Big Apple would, with its incredibly wide variety of culinary experiences, be full to the brim with vegan options. New York City boasts upwards of 563 vegan restaurants and about to 1026 vegetarian. Some of the best American fair can be found at Peacefood for a sit down meal and some amazing desserts or Blossom du jour for a truly magical vegan milkshake. For an even sweeter treat stop by the Pennsey Food Hall and get a couple dozen donuts from the Cinnamon Snail. Be sure to grab a “samich” too!
Los Angeles
The beach lifestyle would not be complete without a heaping pile of greens! Los Angeles has always been the best place to find incredible variety and innovation in vegan food. With everything from burgers to seafood, Hollywood would be nothing without a good healthy diet. Don’t forget to pick up a donut at Donut Friend in Highland Park on your way out! Two Boots, an iconic New York pizza staple, has a location in LA as well if you are craving a cheezy slice. Memorable food travel awaits!
San Francisco
The bay area is just teeming with life, color, and vegan eats. The recent winner of Cupcake Wars, Chloe Coscarelli, raved about her favorite vegan spots in San Fran noting some fancy spots, an all vegan cinnamon roll bakery, and lots of Chinese and Mexican options. Try out Gracias Madre on Mission Street for some great tacos. But really, a vegan cinnamon roll bakery is really all you need, I know I’m there! It’s called Cinnaholic in Berkeley (with locations in a few other states) and even their sugar is vegan!
Seattle
With rainy days and a huge punk scene, veganism is just another one of the wonderfully weird things about Seattle. Boasting some of the best vegan chocolate chip cookies in the land as well as 183 other delicious vegan locations, travel to Seattle is more about the grubs than the rain. For goodness sake there’s even a tiki bar! What more could you ask for? Don’t forget to grab some vegan baked goods at Cinnamon Works in the Pike Place Market or travel down to Plum Bistro and taste something fancy.
Nashville
A surprisingly vegan friendly southern spot, Nashville is up and coming on the vegan scene. Boasting over 30 vegan spots, Nashville has everything from good southern soul food to high end, locally sourced garden restaurants. Check out Avo for some vegan raw food and artisan cocktails or Coco Greens for tea and dessert.
Honolulu
For a more tropical vegan experience it is best to travel out to sea and check out some of Honolulu’s best plant-based food. Aside from being a gorgeous place to be, Honolulu has a bunch of vegan options including a food truck! The popular vegan international chain The Loving Hut also has one or two locations in Honolulu. Don’t miss Banán which serves vegan soft serve from a food truck and everything is sourced locally.
DC
The capital city is full of hippies and greens just as much as any other city! The vegan scene is really coming about this year with new shops and restaurants opening everywhere. Sticky Fingers, a favorite vegan spot for DC veggies recently opened a new diner downtown called Fare Well and many others are turning up all over the place as well. HipCityVeg also serves American fare including some killer milkshakes and Evolve has seriously the best vegan mac and cheese you will ever taste.
Chicago
With over 21 vegan restaurants this city is full of all kinds of vegan options. Not only are there the staple vegan burgers and indian food but Chicago also boasts a vegan raw caterer that also does lifestyle coaching if you are ready to take your veganism one step further. And don’t forget to check out the amazing Sunday brunch at Kal’ish! Urban Vegan serves Thai and Asian inspired cuisine with an American flare.
Atlanta
For all of your vegan southern food needs, Atlanta will fill you up with all the fried seitan and beans as you can handle. Stop by Dulce Vegan Bakery for some sweets or Soul Vegetarian for some incredible vegan soul food. You’ll be sure to find the best chicken and waffles you have ever tasted! Described as an “eco-chic chain,” True Food Kitchen is definitely a must try for both the vegan fare and the cocktails!
Miami
Latin inspired Choices Cafe has two locations in Miami that will give you lots of vegan grub. Check out Plant Food and Wine if you are looking for a truly magical experience. With an outdoor bar and seating and high end vegan food get ready to feel like a plant based movie star. There is even a food truck that serves mix and match vegan food bowls in this sunny city. Full Bloom offers a unique waterfront terrace and some pretty fantastic gluten free and raw options.
