DIY Tanning Lotion

Making this sunless tanning lotion for your skin requires only 2 ingredients, so that sun-kissed glow is nearly effortless!

You will need:

  • 4 black tea bags
  • your favorite white lotion (ideally and unscented)

Method:

  1. Boil about a cup of water and add tea bags.
  2. Allow to sit until cool.
  3. Mix tea into lotion in small doses, in order to get your desired color. Try a ratio of 2 parts lotion to 1 part tea to begin, and add more tea to receive darker results.
  4. Prior to applying lotion mixture, exfoliate the skin. Try the Ecophiles approved coconut sugar scrub.
  5. Apply the lotion mixture to your skin. Allow to dry completely before putting on clothing.

And that’s it! With two ingredients and 5 easy steps, you’ve got a gorgeous, natural looking tan.

DIY Sunburn Relief

Another easy skincare hack, if you spent too long in the sun and ended up with a burn, try out this incredibly soothing and even easier relief technique! This is especially great for children and will not only soothe, it will help cool you down on those blazing summer days.

You will need:

  • Fresh aloe vera juice or gel (preferably), however store bought aloe vera juice or gel will suffice
  • An ice cube tray

Method:

  1. Place the aloe vera juice or gel into an ice cube tray
  2. Put into freezer until frozen, approximately 3 hours
  3. Apply frozen cube of aloe vera to affected area, allowing the juice or gel to melt and soak into skin

With minimal effort, you now have the simplest sunburn relief you could ask for!

DIY Hand Sanitizer

Out and about without a sink in sight? No need to reach for that drying hand sanitizer when you can make your own! Carry around in a small spray bottle for easy application, and enjoy the natural scent of essential oils.

You will need:

  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 20-30 drops of tea tree essential oil
  • 1 tablespoon witch hazel
  • 2 tablespoons pure aloe vera gel
  • a few drops of Vitamin E oil to preserve
  • 1 tablespoon distilled water

Method:

  1. Mix all ingredients well.
  2. Transfer to a small glass spray bottle.
  3. Apply as needed to hands.

DIY Bug Repellent

No one likes to end a beautiful summer day full of mosquito bites. Instead of reaching for the fly swatter, keep those pesky critters away with this eco-friendly bug repellent skincare.

You will need:

  • An array of essential oils
    • Including but not limited to: citronella, eucalyptus, tea tree, bergamot, clove, lavender, mint, rosemary
  • Witch hazel or vodka (or a combination of the two)
  • Distilled Water
  • Vegetable Glycerin
  • a spray bottle

Method:

  1. Fill the spray bottle approximately half way with distilled water
  2. In the remainder of the bottle, add the witch hazel, vodka, or combination of the two. Fill to nearly the top.
  3. Add 50 drops of the array of essential oils you have to choose from.
  4. Add a few drops of vegetable glycerin for preservation.

Not only will this repel insects if applied every few hours, it also smells fantastic and can double as minor aromatherapy.

DIY Deodorant with Aloe

Smell fresh during the sweatiest months with this DIY deodorant with soothing aloe vera.

You will need:

  • 1/3 cup coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel
  • 1 tb baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons beeswax
  • 1/8th cup arrowroot powder
  • 1 heaping tablespoon baking soda
  • a few drops vitamin e oil
  • a 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oils (such a tea tree, lavender, or bergamot)
  • a container or tube to put the mixture in when finished

Method:

  1. Mix together all ingredients until thoroughly combined
  2. Store in a cool, dry place.
  3. Use in no longer than 3 months.

After some quick mixing, you now smell great without any harsh chemicals!

DIY Face Mask

After a long day in the sun, you may need to do a face mask to repair and soothe tired skin. Look no further than this aloe-cucumber DIY mask skincare recipe, perfect for a sun burn or someone simply looking to renew their skin.

You will need:

  • 2 tablespoons of fresh or store bought aloe vera gel
  • 3 to 4 slices of cucumber
  • half a teaspoon of rose water

Method:

  1. Blend ingredients to form a smooth paste
  2. Smooth onto skin and allow to sit for up to 30 minutes
  3. Rinse off with warm water

This mask will not only soothe, it is known to help with hyper pigmentation as well!
