Nestled high in the peaceful Troodos mountains, Casale Panayiotis resort in Cyprus was created to restore and preserve Kalopanayiotis village, which was in decline after many of its young people left to pursue careers in the city. Now, the luxury spa retreat welcomes guests from around the world. You won’t want to stay in a boring Cyprus hotel ever again.
Kalopanayiotis: Restoring the Village
Kalopanayiotis is an ancient Cypriot spa village which has attracted pilgrims for hundreds of years. More recently, people began leaving the village and its agricultural industries to find work in the cities and overseas.
John Papadouris, who had lived in the village before moving abroad for over 30 years, returned home to find his rural mountain village dying. He wanted to breathe life back into his hometown and so raised funds for a restoration project. He turned the old houses and stables into five-star guesthouses, which are reviving the village by attracting tourists and generating jobs in the area. There are now 43 guest rooms across eight houses as well as a spa, cafes and restaurants.
The Guest Rooms
Each of the guest rooms in the eight houses at Casale Panayiotis used to be charming Cypriot village homes. They have now been restored to five-star luxury, while maintaining the authentic, rural character of the village.
Kalopanayiotis is set in the impressive northern slopes of the Troodos mountain range. The ancient spa village is known for its natural sulphur spring water, which is used in Casale Panayiotis’ spa: Myrianthousa. The spa has a range of services including a hydrotherapy spa pool, herbal steam room with a range of different scents, tropical rain and foot baths, private whirlpools, a sauna and even a snow cabin. Couples looking for a romantic treat can also pamper themselves with a ‘Spa Suite Ritual for Two’ where they can enjoy a private treatment suite with outdoor whirlpool, a glass of sparkling wine and platter of fresh, seasonal fruits.
What was once a dying village has been given a new lease of life; but that’s not the end of the story. There are still many projects on the horizon to continue restoring the village’s way of life, restore the historic buildings, preserve the orchards and re-establish the vineyards. It’s hoped that other, nearby villages will also benefit from the tourism that’s being drawn to the area.

When to Visit
With a year-round climate and over 300 days of guaranteed sun each year, Cyprus is a truly year round destination. The mountains are a welcome escape from the searing sun in the summer months but arguably at their most beautiful when blanketed by snow in the winter.
