When in green Slovenia, why not choose an eco-friendly Ljubljana hotel? Where to stay in the charming capital…
Slovenia may be compact, but it’s massive on soul. The country is one of the greenest in the world, and the locals are proudly protective of their country’s natural beauty. The capital, Ljubljana, has nurtured its extensive green spaces lovingly – in fact, in 2017 it was ranked on the list of global top 100 sustainable destinations for the third time. It closed its core city centre area to motor traffic in 2012, and turned it into a delightful pedestrianised zone. The Ljubljana area is home to 161 bird species, 86 of which are endangered and it’s also the first EU capital to have announced a zero waste plan. So why not choose a green Ljubljana hotel for your stay?
And in its urban centre, stands Hotel Park Ljubljana, a firm believer in sustainability. The hotel has implemented inspiring measures to go green – and stay green.
The husband and I stayed at Hotel Park for three uber comfortable nights. It’s location is most convenient and the eco-friendly hotel is surrounded by inviting green spaces. We only discovered that the next morning, having arrived in the middle of the night – but there’s a 24-hour reception desk, which is immensely helpful.
We crash immediately in our inviting superior double room on the top floor and wake up to a sunny view of the city. The design of the spacious room is crisp with clean lines, and exudes warmth. Little touches like a note about how the Ljubljana hotel takes sustainability seriously, and encourages guests to do so as well, stand out.
Breakfast is included, and it’s the perfect way to fill up and start our days of exploring the city. There’s quite a spread for us to choose from and it’s lovely to know that this from locally sourced produce and uses fresh ingredients.
In fact, the hotel has beehives on their rooftop and the honey makes its way into our breakfast!
Location, location, location
Hotel Park has a fantastic location – we pass by a pedestrian street (that has lovely little restaurants from around the world) to reach the iconic Dragon Bridge in a matter of minutes. Here you see the serene river banks and the city’s dominating landmark, Ljubljana castle.
The river banks are buzzing with travel lovers and locals taking photos, heading to work or just simply chilling out in the sunshine at the many outdoor bars and cafes. Slovenian wine is ridiculously affordable and post lunch and all the walking, a nap is called for.
So it’s very convenient to have a hotel that is a short stroll away to relax before hitting the sights and bars in the evening. Also, the restaurant is very reasonably priced, so if you don’t want to bum around looking for an authentic Slovenian meal, it’s right at your doorstep.
My husband and I always prefer a hotel that has a sustainability policy in action. Hotel Park is interesting in this space – their rooftop is an urban home for bees. Beekeeping is big in Slovenia – which is the need of the hour across the world. We took a bee tour that actually started on the rooftop of this very hotel.
“Reduce, reuse and recycle” is one of Hotel Park’s guiding principles, so they use refillable containers, recylced toilet paper and buy in bulk. Thoe hotel has installed low energy lighting, uses an electric car and has removed plastic bottles from their mini bar.
The hotel also supports the local community with free yoga classes and events on the rooftop. So join in if you happen to be there!
Overall, we’d highly recommend Hotel Park Ljubljana as a choice of stay. Clean, comfortable and eco-friendly, this Ljubljana hotel ticks all the right boxes. Urban and green is not a combo we see often, but it’s a cozy sanctuary from the crowds in the heart of the city.
